# Boot.

Four steps, no shortcuts: install Kiln, install official firmware, boot system software, add the games you own.

## Facts (2026-10-13)

- **Steps:** 4 — installer, firmware, boot, games
- **Firmware:** Official PS5UPDATE.PUP, installed by you
- **Bundled:** Nothing — no firmware, no games
- **Host:** Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit

## The sequence

1. [Install the Windows installer](/boot/windows-installer) — the emulator and the launcher, nothing else.

2. [Install official firmware](/boot/install-firmware) — PS5UPDATE.PUP from Sony, via File then Install Firmware.

3. [Boot system software](/boot/boot-system-software) — brings up the PS5 home.

4. [Add the games you own](/boot/add-ps5-games) — then press Start.

Skip step 2 and nothing boots. There is no firmware-free path, and anyone selling one is lying.

## What Kiln never does

Kiln never bundles firmware, hosts firmware, or modifies the PUP. You download PS5UPDATE.PUP from Sony's official PS5 system software page yourself.

Kiln never ships games. Own the games you already have — the installer is the emulator and the launcher only.

Kiln is a PlayStation 5 emulator for Windows PC. Windows installer. Not affiliated with Sony.

## Controller first

Connect your [DualSense or Xbox pad](/boot/dualsense-on-pc) before launching. A frozen boot can look like a dead controller, so confirm the pad in a responding menu.

Keyboard mapping exists for when no pad is around. Pad is still the real answer.

## FAQ

### What order do I install things?

Installer first, then official firmware via File then Install Firmware, then Boot system software, then add the games you own.

### Does the installer include firmware or games?

No. The installer is the emulator and launcher only. Firmware comes from Sony's official page; games are the ones you already own.

### My controller does nothing. Is it broken?

Probably not — connect the pad before launching and confirm it in a menu that is responding. A frozen boot looks like a dead controller.
