# Briefs.

Short definitions for the two terms every Kiln user must know: the firmware PUP and Vulkan 1.3.

## Facts (2026-10-13)

- **Entries:** 2 — PUP, Vulkan 1.3
- **Style:** Short, plain, blunt
- **Audience:** New emulator users
- **Host:** Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit

## The two terms

- [Firmware PUP](/brief/firmware-pup) — Sony's official system-software file. You download it, Kiln installs it, never bundled.

- [Vulkan 1.3](/brief/vulkan-1-3) — the graphics API Kiln renders on. No Vulkan 1.3, no Kiln.

## Why only two

Because these are the two that block boots. Everything else is a setting, and settings live in the [lab](/lab).

## FAQ

### What is PS5UPDATE.PUP?

Sony's official PS5 system-software file. You download it from Sony's page and Kiln installs it via File then Install Firmware.

### What is Vulkan 1.3?

The graphics API version Kiln requires. Your GPU driver provides it — current drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
