The two terms

  • Firmware PUP — Sony's official system-software file. You download it, Kiln installs it, never bundled.
  • Vulkan 1.3 — the graphics API Kiln renders on. No Vulkan 1.3, no Kiln.

Why only two

Because these are the two that block boots. Everything else is a setting, and settings live in the lab.

Questions

What is PS5UPDATE.PUP?

Sony's official PS5 system-software file. You download it from Sony's page and Kiln installs it via File then Install Firmware.

What is Vulkan 1.3?

The graphics API version Kiln requires. Your GPU driver provides it — current drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.

01

Firmware PUP.

PS5UPDATE.PUP is Sony's official system software. You get it from Sony, Kiln installs it, games boot from it.

02

Vulkan 1.3.

Vulkan 1.3 is the graphics API Kiln renders on. Your driver provides it. Old driver, wrong GPU, no frames.

03

Install firmware.

Download PS5UPDATE.PUP from Sony's official page, then File → Install Firmware. Official file only — Kiln never hosts it.

04

GPU and CPU.

GPU: Vulkan 1.3, 8 GB+ VRAM, current driver, discrete device selected. CPU: 8 real cores. Everything else is secondary.

05

The lab.

One rig, blunt grades, no magic settings. Everything the lab knows about frames, settings, and statuses.
